EMERITUS PROFESSOR ANTHONY APEKE ADIMADO
THE SIXTH PRESIDENT OF GCUC
He taught at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria from 1979 to 1983; later at the University of Ilorin in Nigeria from 1983 to 1985 as a Senior Lecturer in Chemistry.
He joined the KNUST in August 1985 as a Senior Lecturer and rose through the ranks to Full Professorship in Chemistry in October 2001 at KNUST. Emeritus Prof Adimado retired at the statutory retirement age of sixty (60) in 2010. He then took up a post-retirement contract appointment as Professor of Chemistry at KNUST from October 2010 to July 2021. He was appointed by KNUST as an Emeritus Professor of Chemistry on 1st July 2022.
Professor Adimado has served his alma mater, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Ghana in diverse ways. He has held various positions as Head of Chemistry Department, Dean of School of Graduate Studies, Dean of International Programmes, all at the KNUST.
As a retired Professor of Chemistry, he continued to provide mentorship to young and enterprising Scientists and Lecturers. He has contributed a substantial number of research articles that promote national and international development. His scientific works have been cited in several internationally acclaimed Journals and Bibliographies.
Professor Adimado has also led a few Delegations in raising Research and Development Funds from Donor Agencies and other International Institutions for Research and Development activities in the University and nationally. He holds several Scholarship/Fellowship Awards from the following: French Government; USAID; ICTP, Trieste, Italy; UNESCO and the Rockefeller Foundation, USA.
He is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences; and a Distinguished Friend of Council, of the West African Examinations Council (W.A.E.C), in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Achievement of the Objects of W.A.E.C., the 2016 edition (First Ever Recipient from KNUST).
He has considerable experience in university teaching; international relations and outreach services delivery; vast institutional management experience; collaborative research and research management experience; board room experience; and Chairmanship and membership of high-profile Boards, Committees and Teams. He has in-depth knowledge of the tertiary landscape in Ghana; and has been deeply involved in the Quality Assurance Systems and issues; Governance issues at the Tertiary Education Level; Accreditation of new programmes and re-accreditation of existing programmes at the Tertiary Education Level.
Prof. Adimado consults for the Gnana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and has done considerable work for the former National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE), National Board for Professional and Technician Examination (NABPTEX) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB).
He led a team which assessed the preparedness of the ten (10) Polytechnics for their conversion into Technical Universities which finally came to fruition. He has also led a team to audit both teaching and non-teaching staff of the ten (10) Technical Universities and later the Thirteen (13) Public Universities in Ghana.
He has chaired various Committees of the Vice Chancellor at the KNUST, very notable is the Restructuring and Rationalization of Academic Units and Programmes, Finance and Administration Units, in 2017 - 2018. This led to some re-organisation of some Academic units in the University.
The University Council has appointed him as Chairman of the Management Board, of the Ghana Universities Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS), KNUST with effect from 1st January 2020.
Emeritus Professor Anthony A. Adimado assumed office as President of GCUC on 1st November 2022 for a four (4) year term.
