ENERGY SECTOR LEVY TIMING WRONG- ECONOMIST

ENERGY SECTOR LEVY TIMING WRONG- ECONOMIST
An economics lecturer of the Garden City University colleague, Dr. Francis Tandoh has said the timing of the energy sector levy was wrong.

The Energy Sector Levy and the new tariff increment had attracted public uproar of which a nationwide demonstration was organized by organized labour on Wednesday, January 20.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has tagged the recent hikes in utility tariffs as socially undemocratic and unacceptable.

The group in a statement issued in Accra and signed by its Secretary General, Kofi Asamoah, after it embarked upon a nationwide demonstration, warned they could resort to further street protestations, if government fails to heed their call.

The statement, among other things, called on government to take immediate steps to withdraw the newly introduced Energy Sector Levies Act, which the TUC says, has occasioned further increases in petroleum products.

Speaking on the agitations from the labour force over the increases on Daybreak Kapital Thursday, Dr. Tandoh said ‘the levy itself, I think the timing is not right for Ghanaians. It is not going to help”.

He said several times, the government told Ghanaians increases in levies were to be used for the clearance of outstanding debts which had never been the case.

“So Ghanaians have realized that they pay without any accountability so paying for increased levies and tariff was not the solution, “he averred.

Dr. Tandoh therefore deemed the demonstration a good one as a way forward of having the government keep to its promises and also work on the new levy charges as well as the tariffs.

Meanwhile organised labour has agreed to back down on some of its demands as negotiations with government continues.
